Welcome
Politics is broken. The distance between people and power has grown to such an extent that people have virtually no influence.
Internationally we have in the European Union a powerful institution whose leaders are almost completely insulated from any real democratic pressure. Anyone who has
tried influencing decisions at the level of the EU knows how difficult it is.
Nationally we are given a choice every 1,500 or so days between one group of people and another, and in between we have no choice but to accept one bad decision after another.
At local level, it's even worse. Local Authorities are routinely overruled by Central Government, even where the issue is a truly local one like a supermarket application,
or a garden development.
Across the board, we need a programme of radical decentralisation, so that people can decide for themselves what is best for their communities. Local authorities, schools,
hospitals and police forces should be able to decide what is best for the people in their communities, rather than Whitehall telling them what is best for them.
With the right approach – one based on real trust – we will be able to face up to the challenges we face, in dealing with crime, tackling the environmental crisis,
improving our schools and hospitals.
