Zac joined with Somaliland’s Mission to the UK to bring together Somaliland’s Liban Yusuf Osman - Deputy Minister for Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Minister for Environment and Rural Development, Shukri Haji Ismail Bandare, and environmental experts from Kew Gardens and the Aspinall Foundation to highlight the efforts of the Somaliland Government in combating poaching and protecting the environment.
Somaliland is for all intents and purposes an independent - but as yet unrecognised nation in East Africa and a former British colony. It has long suffered from natural disasters like droughts and cyclones, as well as a significant increase in the illegal wildlife trade with the Gulf as its main market. Despite these odds, Somaliland has been at the forefront of tackling these issues with a particular focus on putting an end to the illegal wildlife trade by taking a strong stance in prosecuting those involved.
Zac introduced the event, which was chaired by ITV International News Editor Rageh Omaar, and spoke of the incredible potential of Somaliland, praising its aspiration to become a global environmental leader.
