Last month Zac paid a visit to Ham Avenues to watch Operation Centaur at work, maintaining the grassland using traditional machinery, powered by two magnificent shire horses.
Operation Centaur are regularly called in by local groups like Richmond Park and Thames Landscape Strategy to help with the management of grassland. Using horses is both quieter and more environmentally friendly than modern machinery, and they can also be used in places that heavier motorised machines can’t reach.
Zac said, “Not only do we love to see these beautiful animals in our local community, but the horses clearly love doing this work. Projects like Operation Centaur are good both for our environment and for the protection of these endangered Shire horse breeds.”
