PARLIAMENTARY NEWS

HEATHROW

My campaign against a third runway at Heathrow Airport continues in Parliament and beyond. As chair of the cross-party group of MPs opposed to expansion, I am working with Conservative, Labour, Liberal Democrat and Green colleagues, using questions and debates to highlight the numerous flaws in the runway plan. I am also working closely with the No3rd Runway Coalition  which I helped found and which now includes numerous councils and almost all of the campaign groups, to co-ordinate the public’s response to expansion.  It is vital that opponents of expansion respond to the Government’s consultation which closes today – you can find it HERE

BREXIT AND THE ENVIRONMENT

Leaving the European Union presents a big opportunity to improve our environment and animal welfare policies. The EU Withdrawal Bill currently making its way through Parliament will preserve all existing EU environmental laws and directives, meaning that we do not miss out on the good things EU membership has clearly done for our beaches, rivers and birds. As a consequence of interventions by colleagues and myself, the Government will set up a fully independent body to ensure that environmental law is upheld. I have an ongoing role scrutinising these issues on the Environmental Audit Committee and you can read more about the Committee’s work HERE.

MEETING WITH EU RESIDENTS

I convened a meeting with representatives from ‘The 3 Million’ and the ‘British in Europe’ – organisations that are campaigning to protect the rights for EU citizens in the UK, and UK residents elsewhere in the EU. I have formally asked the Secretary of State for Exiting the European Union to meet them early in the new year to hear their concerns. Read more HERE

FEMALE GENITAL MUTILATION

Female Genital Mutilation (FGM) is an abhorrent crime that still affects many thousands of women and girls in the UK, and many millions more overseas. Along with Labour MP Jess Phillips, I chair the All Party Parliamentary Group (APPG) on FGM.  We are leading on scrutinising the Government’s efforts to eradicate FGM at home and abroad. I am meeting with campaigners, government officials and medics in preparation for the APPG’s forthcoming inquiry, where we will explore what more needs to be done in the NHS, schools, the criminal justice system, and the UK’s international development work.

ANIMAL WELFARE

I am delighted to have played a significant part in persuading ministers to take action on a variety of animal welfare issues.  These include tougher maximum sentences for animal cruelty, mandatory CCTV in all slaughterhouses, a ban on bee-harming pesticides, a ban on plastic microbeads which are devastating to marine life and an end to the ivory trade here in the UK. I am leading efforts in Parliament to push the Government to go even further. See my speech on the issue HERE
